Scrappy Canvas Tutorial

Today I wanted to share with you a tutorial on how to make a Magnetic Scrappy Canvas.

Supplies Needed:
  • Choice of Scrapbook Papers and Embellishments
  • Choice of Canvas (in this tutorial I'm using a 8x10 raised/thick canvas)
  • Metal Piece usually the size of the picture you want to use (I'm using a 5x7 piece)
  • Mod Podge and foam brush
  • Paper Cutter
  • Craft Glue Dots
  1. I usually use a 8x10 canvas. Then I usually cut a background sheet of scrapbook paper to 7x9. With this one, since I'm using an old canvas, I cut my paper to 8x10 to cover up the whole thing. Using glue dots, adhere your piece of paper to the canvas. I did 3 glue dots, then 2, then 3, then 2 and then 3 (3 on all the edges) The craft glue dots are stronger to make sure your paper will stay on your canvas.
  2. Place all scrapbook papers and any background embellishments (anything that will be under the photo/metal piece) down, the way you want them. I used a 3.5x8 piece of sunflower scrapbook paper and a 5 in. piece of brown ribbon on top of my background paper.
  3. Cut a piece of cardstock as the same size as your metal piece. For mine I cut a 5x7 piece of darker textured barn red cardstock for my 5x7 piece of metal. Get ready to Mod Podge!
  4. Take your metal piece and layer mod podge thinly on it with your foam brush.
  5. Then place your cut to size piece of cardstock over it and layer more mod podge over that. I do one layer in one direction and then another layer in the other direction. I think it helps the paper lie smoother. Let dry.
  6. Then using a lot of glue dots, adhere your metal mod podged piece on top of your background and canvas.
  7. Decorate the rest as you would a scrapbook page adding any other embellishments you'd like to use.
  8. To hang, I hammer a metal frame hanger to the back of flat thin canvases. Or place on a picture stand. For this particular, the thick raised canvases, all you need is a screw in the wall and it's easy to hang.

Here are two other examples!

I did two 4x4 metal pieces on this scrappy canvas.

I used 4x4 metal pieces on these coordinating 8x8 canvases

I love to see others' scrapbook creations too. You can link them up to my Scrappy Saturdays! Hope you enjoy this tutorial!
